House 27: Letter

What message, document or piece of writing is involved?

The House of the Letter draws your attention to what comes through writing.

An awaited email, a contract to read, an invoice, a file or a few words sent by phone may matter.

Look at the card in position 27 and ask: “What message, document or piece of writing is involved?”

It may show the kind of document, its contents or what is happening around this written exchange.

Start with the concrete medium

If you are waiting for a reply, think of the message or file in question. If your question concerns a procedure, look at what needs to be written, received or signed.

The card does not necessarily give you the exact words. It may already help you recognize what kind of writing is involved.

The Ring: a commitment put in writing

The Ring speaks of agreement, contract and commitment.

In the House of the Letter, it may show a written contract, a membership or a message that formalizes a promise.

Position 27 points you to the document. The Ring clarifies that it commits or connects the people involved.

The Coffin: a document brings something to a close

The Coffin speaks of an ending, a stop or a closure.

In this position, it may show a cancellation letter, a notice of termination or the closing of a file.

Look at what this writing brings to a close. There is no need to add a dramatic prediction.

What if the Letter falls in its own House?

When the Letter falls in the House of the Letter, writing or communication takes on particular importance in the situation.

This may draw your attention to a message, document, contract, letter or any other information conveyed in writing.

But it does not mean that the message will arrive soon, tell the truth or bring favourable news. The Letter in its own House mainly puts written communication in the foreground. The other cards in the Grand Tableau can help you understand what it contains, how it arrives and what it may lead to.

Writing, speaking and receiving news

The Letter concerns writing. The Birds may show the conversation it prompts. The Rider may signal its arrival.

These cards do not all have to tell the same story. An email can arrive without being discussed, or a conversation can begin without a document.

What is written still needs to be understood

A document may matter without being clear, true or favourable. Read what it contains before drawing conclusions about its consequences.

The House of the Letter shows where to focus your attention. It cannot sign the document for you.
