House 21: Mountain

What obstacle or delay is blocking progress?

In the House of the Mountain, you look at where something can no longer move through easily.

An answer is late. A process runs into a requirement. A distance becomes hard to cross.

Look at the card in position 21 and ask: “What obstacle or delay is blocking progress?”

It may show the barrier itself or what the barrier is holding back.

The barrier and what it holds back

If you already know a trip is delayed, look for what is keeping you from leaving. The card may clarify the obstacle.

If you already know what the difficulty is, the card may instead show what is affected by it.

For example, with a communication card, a message may impose a condition. It may also be the message that never arrives. Return to the known facts to choose.

The Rider: an arrival meets a delay

The Rider speaks of what is arriving or getting underway.

In the House of the Mountain, news or a visit may meet a delay.

The card shows what is trying to arrive. Position 21 asks you to look at what is slowing it down rather than announce that it will never happen.

The Ship: distance becomes difficult

The Ship speaks of travel, distance, and opening toward elsewhere.

Here, a trip may be delayed or an opening to another market may meet a limit.

Distance may itself be the obstacle. Ask whether the problem comes from the journey, separation, or the conditions needed to move ahead.

The Sun: success meets a limit

The Sun speaks of success, clarity, and energy.

In this position, success may take longer, or the available energy may not be enough to overcome the difficulty.

If your question is about understanding the blockage, the Sun may also make it more visible. A favorable card does not automatically remove the obstacle.

What if Mountain falls in its own House?

Mountain in the House of the Mountain shows that an obstacle is firmly in place and not easy to get around in one simple move. A delay, resistance, or limit is truly weighing on progress.

The useful question is not only “Is it blocked?” but “What exactly is blocking it?” Nearby cards may show the nature and duration of the obstacle, what remains out of reach, and where another way may exist.

This position makes the difficulty more visible. It does not carve the word “impossible” in stone.

A delay is not a sentence

Mountain may be heavy, resistant, and slow to get around. That does not mean you have to conclude it is impossible forever.

The other cards may show timing, support, or another way to approach the difficulty.

Name the obstacle before trying to cross it

Facing position 21, try to say what wants to move forward, then what is stopping it.

Recognizing a limit does not yet give you the solution. It already helps you stop pushing endlessly against the wrong door.
