House 23: Mice

What is wearing away, shrinking, or causing worry?

The House of Mice speaks of what slowly diminishes, what wears us down, and what worries us.

It may concern many areas of life: money gradually going out, energy fading, a relationship wearing thin, problems piling up at home, work becoming burdensome, or a worry returning again and again.

In the Grand Tableau, the card that falls in the House of Mice helps you understand what is wearing away, what is missing, or what is causing stress.

Look for what is slowly diminishing

The Mice do not necessarily show one large, sudden loss.

Instead, imagine small mice nibbling something away piece by piece.

At first, almost nothing is missing. But if it continues, the difference eventually shows.

The card in this House shows what is being affected.

Mice + House

The House speaks of home, family, and where we live.

In the House of Mice, it may show something at home deteriorating or becoming burdensome.

This may be small repairs piling up, housing expenses, a tiring family atmosphere, or a domestic problem left unattended.

It does not have to be a major problem. The Mice often show something small that takes up space because it lasts.

Mice + Fish

The Fish speak of money, resources, and what is flowing.

In the House of Mice, they may show money gradually diminishing.

This may be repeated expenses, costs adding up, or simply more money going out than coming in.

Here, the Mice show the decrease, and the Fish show what is decreasing: resources.

Mice + Heart

The Heart speaks of love, feelings, and what makes us happy.

In the House of Mice, it may show a relationship or feelings gradually wearing thin.

Small repeated arguments, a lack of attention, or worry may eventually tire the bond.

This does not necessarily mean the relationship will end.

It shows instead that something deserves attention before the wear becomes more serious.

The Mice may also speak of worry

Sometimes it is not a material thing that is diminishing.

The Mice may show what is gnawing at us.

A thought that returns every day, a fear, a problem we cannot forget, or a situation slowly taking up all the space in our mind.

The card there may then answer the question:

What is worrying me so much?

What if Mice fall in their own House?

In the canon of the House of Mice, this self-placement first invites you to look at what is repeatedly wearing away, diminishing, or causing worry. A small loss, fatigue, or concern nibbling at the situation deserves to be noticed before it takes up more space.

One source, however, offers a very different reading: Mice at home would speak of fertility and productivity. Do not mash the two ideas together to invent an unlikely “productive loss.” They describe two distinct movements.

So look at the rest of the tableau. Does it clearly show erosion, expenses, stress, or exhaustion? Or are there real signs of abundant, fruitful activity? Without such signs, the reading of wear remains the most consistent starting point with the House's canon.

Wear does not mean total loss

The Mice often show a process already underway, but they do not say everything will disappear.

An expense may be stopped. A tiring relationship may be repaired. A problem at home may be resolved. A worry may fade once we finally understand what is causing it.

That is the value of this House: it helps you notice what is nibbling away at us before it takes up too much space.

When you find a card in the House of Mice, simply ask yourself:

“What is diminishing, wearing away, or worrying me?”

Then let the card show you where to look.
